Green Power Solutions announces ESA-supported Smart Ops project

Green Power Solutions has secured a co-funded project with the European Space Agency (ESA) to explore how machine learning and satellite positioning can help operators maintain remote, off-grid equipment more effectively.

  • ESACo-funded with the European Space Agency
  • Machine learningEarlier maintenance insight
  • GalileoSatellite positioning

The 18-month project, Smart Ops, will build on our TrackSyte® remote monitoring platform. Its focus is practical: helping operations teams identify maintenance needs earlier, prioritise equipment issues and send the right engineer when a site visit is required.

For our team, the project marks the next step in turning asset data into useful operational decisions.

The next decision

From monitoring equipment to planning action

Operators of mobile CCTV towers and other off-grid infrastructure manage equipment spread across many locations. Keeping that equipment running means understanding battery condition, charging performance, available fuel and developing faults.

TrackSyte® already brings this information together, giving customers visibility of their assets without having to visit each site.

Smart Ops will explore how that information can support the next decision: what needs attention, how urgent is it, and what should happen next?

What Smart Ops will deliver

The project will develop and test capabilities to:

  1. Identify developing faults and maintenance needs.

  2. Prioritise issues according to their likely operational impact.

  3. Support remote resolution where appropriate.

  4. Help plan engineer visits using asset location, engineer proximity and the skills needed for the job.

The aim is to reduce time spent checking equipment manually and give teams a clearer basis for planning their work.

Satellite technology

Where satellite technology fits

Smart Ops will use satellite positioning data, including Europe’s Galileo system, to help locate assets and support engineer dispatch and route planning.

Combining location information with equipment data could help teams coordinate visits more effectively.

We will test how these capabilities perform in real operating conditions and measure whether they improve efficiency.

  3. Dispatch & route planningThe right engineer, at the right time
Example

For example, an asset approaching a fuel replenishment threshold could be considered alongside nearby maintenance work, helping planners decide when to visit and which engineer is best placed to attend.

Pilot customers

Developed around everyday customer challenges

Customer involvement will be central to the project. Working with pilot operators, we will examine how maintenance is managed today, establish a baseline and evaluate the difference Smart Ops makes.

That includes understanding the manual work behind daily equipment checks, how teams prioritise faults and the constraints engineers face when attending remote sites.

The project will assess opportunities to reduce unnecessary journeys, make better use of engineering time and improve equipment uptime. It will also explore whether better forecasting and visit planning can reduce fuel waste.

These are outcomes to demonstrate through the project, with customer feedback helping shape the service as it develops.

What’s next

Building the next stage of TrackSyte

Smart Ops supports our wider ambition for TrackSyte®: helping customers use operational data to keep equipment running and manage resources more effectively.

After 18 months of work to bring the project to this point, we are pleased to begin the next stage with ESA’s support. We look forward to sharing progress as we develop, test and evaluate the service alongside our pilot customers.
